Consumer Rights & Responsibilities: Protect Yourself
and Your Assets
Each day the Knoxville
News-Sentinel tells the story about the rough economic times,
with multiple pages of foreclosures. Unemployment is at an
all-time high and bills are starting to pile up. What should you
do to protect your family and try and prevent foreclosure or
bankruptcy? Learn about recent legislation aimed to help
vulnerable consumers avoid foreclosure and steer clear of rescue
scams. Understand your rights if you are trying to pay off a
debt and what to do if you are sued by a creditor. Consider the
legal and financial implications of your adjustable rate
mortgage – warning signs to look for before your home is at
risk. This course will review how these issues impact you and
your personal financial situation.

Nine years ago,
President Bush signed The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act
of 2001 into law. That bill includes estate and gift tax reform
provisions including eliminating the federal estate tax for one year
beginning January 1, 2010. The clock ran out and Congress did nothing. As of
today, there is no federal estate tax, but there is still a Tennessee
inheritance tax.
